Fairleigh Institute for Lifelong Learning at Florham
(FILL-Florham)

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: How much does FILL cost?
A: $295/semester.

Q: What do I get for my tuition?
A: You can audit (no credit) one university course, and as many FILL classes (no credit) as you like. You get access to campus, FDU facilities, and events. You get a student ID card, an email address, and a parking sticker good for the academic year.

Q: Are classes online or in-person?
A: Both. Almost all university courses meet in-person on the Florham Campus of FDU (in Madison, NJ), but the FILL courses are a mix of online only (via Zoom) and in-person. You will need a computer, tablet (such as an iPad), or smartphone to enjoy online classes.

Q: What's the difference between university and FILL courses?
A: University courses are taught by FDU professors with undergraduate students. These courses follow a syllabus through a 15-week semester. FILL members don't have to do assignments, but are encouraged to participate in discussion and complete assigned readings. These classes generally meet twice a week (75 minutes each) or once a week for 2 1/2 hours.
FILL courses are taught by professionals and members of the program and include fiction reading, poetry, opera, history, current events, statistics, and many more. These are informal, discussion-based classes that foster community and sharing ideas and creativity. They vary in session length from single sessions to 14 weeks, and usually meet once per week for about 75 minutes. Most FILL classes meet between 10am and 4pm, Mondays through Fridays.
Q: Is there a per class rate?
A: No. We aren't set up to offer a la carte payment. We encourage members to take multiple classes to get the best experience from our program.

Q: I'm interested! How do I get started?
A: Please email our Lifelong Learning Office (lifelonglearning@fdu.edu) they will help you get added to our email list, get you an application, and help you create a student ID number. Check out the "Join" page for a step by step process.

Q: How come I'm not getting emails from FILL?
A: Your emails may be ending up in your "Junk" or "Spam" folders. You might want to check these and/or consider "whitelisting" bpeabody@fdu.edu and fill@fdu.edu.

Q: Can I pay online for FILL?
A: Yes. There is a service fee for online payment with a credit card. You can get more information on payments by clicking here.

Q: I registered for FILL. Now what?
A: Once you have applied, gotten your student ID number, and registered, you are eligible to get your parking sticker (good for the academic year) and student ID card (good forever). Once you get an email giving you the "all clear," you can get your parking sticker and ID from the Public Safety building ("The Barn"). Click on Directions.

Q: I'm having technology problems. What can I do?
A: You can call our IT program at 973-443-8822 or email fdutac@fdu.edu. Have your student ID number handy - they will ask for it.

Q: I didn't get a welcome email from my FILL class. Why not?
A: You should get a welcome email about a week before your first class session. If you don't, the message might be in your spam/junk folder; please check! You should also reach out to the individual instructor to make sure you are on the roster (click on "Classes" for the emails).

Q: I'm not getting emails and updates for my university class. Why not?
A: University professors typically communicate only with official FDU emails (emails ending in student.fdu.edu). Every FILL student or instructor gets one of these emails, but you must check them. Please contact Bruce or IT for more help.
